Segezha pulp and paper plant plans to use peat as a fuel
Segezha pulp-and-paper plant is going to substitute heavy fuel oil with peat for heat production. It was declared by the first deputy head of republican committee on reforming housing and communal services Mr. Avraam Skljarsky, who was making a presentation at the international bioenergy seminar which has taken place on May 31 in Petrozavodsk.
By words of Mr. Skljarsky, the management of the company has decided to carry out geological researches for estimation of stocks of peat deposits, located near the plant. Transition to cheaper and non-polluting local kind of fuel will allow the industrial giant of Karelia to reduce essentially the harmful emissions and to save money. Now plant consumes a significant amount of heavy fuel oil not only for its own needs, but also for heat supply of the housing sector of Segezha city.
As the first deputy head of republican committee on reforming housing and communal services Mr. Skljarsky has noted, by 2010 the share of fuel peat and wood waste in the regional fuel and energy balance of municipal energy sector should increase almost in 2,5 times and to reach 24 % that will correspond approximately a level of Finland.
