Murmansk wants establishment of free economic zones

Authorities and business interests in Murmansk Oblast are working for the estblishment of socalled "special economic zones" in the region. According to the news site Murman.ru, two potential zones are of special interest, one on the western side of the Kola Bay, based around petroleum industrial installations, and one in Apatity, based on exisiting technological institutions. Special economic zones could be granted tax and investment benefits.

Russian federal authorities are determined to establish a certain number of zones in the country. The Murmansk regional administration is presently working to elaborate business plans for economic zones, and hope to present these to the the federal government already in the course of this fall.
